Located only 45 minutes from the bustle of the Triad, the town of Elkin moves at a more relaxed pace. You’ll find that people take time to stop and chat, tell a story or two in this quiet little town of 4,000 gentle folks here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many inhabitants have wonderful stories to share (just ask them!) about old Elkin’s environs and how it’s inhabitants worked at the local textile giant, Hugh Chatham Mill, established in 1880. The Mill grew and prospered from the railroads inroad to this part of the county. The historic bridge across the Yadkin River is a testament to Elkin’s former glory days.
Now that the textile industry has pretty much closed its doors in the Carolinas, this former company town has not stood still but rather reinvented itself as “The Gateway to the Wine Country of the Yadkin Valley.” Downtown Elkin is undergoing a commercial revival and Main Street offers a diversity of unique boutiques, shops, restaurants and galleries.
Places to dine, shop, relax and lift your spirits (cultural or otherwise) are only steps away from one another! We invite you to spend some time in our beautiful little township, chat with our gracious people, and stay awhile.
The immediate Elkin area and surrounding counties support over a dozen wineries.
While you’re in our part of the country, why not make a weekend of it! Fourth Friday nights of each month from April through fall, weather permitting, Main Street will be closed, shops will be open and musicians will play — and you might even catch an outdoor movie in front of the old Reeves Theatre!
Once you’ve explored Elkin, you may want to continue your journey up the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway www.blueridgeparkway.com, and Stone Mountain State Park, only a 20 minute drive up Hwy 21. Stone Mountain has got to be one of the most breathtaking state parks in the NC park system. If you’re strong of leg, the hiking trails up the granite face lead to a spectacular reward at the top: a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountain’s peaks and valleys. Or enjoy the day trout fishing, stream wading, picnicking and less strenuous hiking.
